Unlike synthetic fragrances built from a handful of controlled compounds, agarwood’s scent comes from a natural, biological process — resin forming inside wood over years in response to injury or infection. That organic, uncontrolled process is exactly why no two pieces of agarwood smell identical, and why the aroma often shifts and evolves as it develops in the air once heated.
Common Descriptors, Explained
- Woody — The foundational note in virtually all agarwood; a warm, dry, wood-like base.
- Ambery — A resinous, warm sweetness, reminiscent of amber resin.
- Leathery — A rich, worn-leather depth often found in denser, more mature agarwood.
