Sana’i agarwood isn’t worn like a perfume oil — it’s meant to be heated, releasing its aromatic smoke into the air. Whether you’re new to burning oud or looking to refine your technique, here’s a practical guide to getting the most out of your agarwood.
The Traditional Way to Enjoy Oud: Heat, Don’t Wear
Genuine agarwood chips (Sana’i oud) release their full aromatic complexity through heat, not direct skin application. The most common and traditional method uses a charcoal briquette:
- Light the charcoal briquette and let it burn until it develops an even, glowing ember (usually a few minutes, until it’s covered in light grey ash).
- Place the briquette in a heat-safe burner or censer, such as a traditional brass or ceramic incense burner filled partway with sand or ash to insulate the base.
- Add a small piece of agarwood on top of or near the ember — not directly touching intense flame, so the wood smolders and releases fragrant smoke rather than burning up quickly.
- Let the smoke waft through the room, or pass clothing through it briefly to let the scent settle into fabric — a common practice for special occasions and gatherings.
A little goes a long way. Because our Royal and Premium grades carry a denser resin profile, a small chip is usually enough to fill a room with a rich, long-lasting aroma.
Matching Technique to Grade
- Royal Oud — releases a bold, complex smoke almost immediately due to its high resin content; a very small piece is sufficient.
- Premium Oud — a balanced release of aroma; slightly more product can be used for a fuller effect.
- Daily Oud — lighter resin means a slightly larger piece or slightly longer heating time may be needed to enjoy the full scent profile, making it well-suited for everyday, casual use.
Alternative Methods
If you don’t have a traditional charcoal burner, electric incense burners (which heat agarwood at a controlled, lower temperature without an open ember) are a popular modern alternative. They tend to produce a gentler release of aroma and avoid the smokier character of charcoal burning, which some people prefer for indoor use.
Storage: Protecting Your Investment
Proper storage matters, since heat, light, and air exposure can affect resin quality over time.
- Keep it cool and dark — store away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can degrade the resin’s aromatic compounds before you even burn it.
- Keep containers tightly sealed — oxygen exposure can gradually alter the wood’s aromatic character.
- Avoid humidity — excess moisture can affect the wood’s condition and how evenly it smolders when heated.
- Use the original packaging when possible — our packaging is designed with these storage conditions in mind.
A Note on Natural Variation
Because agarwood is a natural material, you may notice subtle differences in color, density, or scent intensity between batches, even within the same grade. This isn’t a defect — it’s a reflection of the material’s authenticity. Genuine, high-quality oud simply doesn’t come from a standardized, identical mold every time.
