What Is Agarwood, First of All?
Agarwood is a fragrant, resin-infused wood that forms inside certain species of Aquilaria trees when they’re wounded or infected by a specific type of mold. In response, the tree produces a dark, aromatic resin as a defense mechanism. Over years — sometimes decades — this resin saturates the wood, transforming an ordinary tree into one of the most prized raw materials in the fragrance world. This resin-infused wood is what we know as “oud” or “gaharu” (the Indonesian term).
So What Is “Sana’i” Specifically?
Sana’i refers to a particular style and standard of processed agarwood — one that reflects careful craftsmanship in how the resin-rich wood is harvested, refined, and shaped into a finished product.
